Overwatch Link (Fan Art)

Hey Polycount!
     I absolutely love Overwatch as well as the games aesthetic, and have been hyped for some time now. (comon Sombra!). So when I came across the Overwatch Link concept by the super talented Jeremy Vitry, I just had to make it in 3D. (with permission :wink:)

Most parts are still in blockout stage and very WIP but I felt I was far enough along for any kind of feedback. I am super excited about this project and look forward to progressing here. Thanks for looking!

(Blockout)

Aaaand the base I made for good measure.

    Alright back in action! Everything is pretty much ready for the fun part, details! I drew out the design idea I have for the front of his shield to make it mesh with the Overwatch style. The three cylinders on his chest are idea placeholders for the colored potions link often uses in his game.

    I'm not super sold on the face and hair yet, I feel like somethings off? I just cant put my finger on it, perhaps I have just been looking at it for too long.

    Anyways, on to the shield/weapon/details!

  • RitualSynergY
    Received some great feedback and really tried to work as much in as I could. Finished all the HP parts for Link, as well as his weapon and shield. On to LP.

    thats a great concept and this is progressing well!

    Cool concept! Good luck :) Watching it.

    oh yaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh :) Diggin the WIP! I took the concept and placed it on top of this and it layed out perfectly but something about the body's overall proportions seems "short" or "squashed". Here's a gif i attached that includes a head count and my approach to slightly pull his proportions longer.

    Wow. Nice concept! Definitely keeping my eyes on this thread.
  • blastfaizu2
    This sure is something..I am one of Link's fan and after looking at your concept,I felt like I wanna play zelda again..good job!!
  • RitualSynergY
    @travisdreams Thanks man!
    Yup - totally see what you mean, I will definitely go make some changes. REALLY appreciate the feedback. Thanks again!

    @TomGT Thanks so much!
    @blastfaizu2 Thanks man! The concept belongs to  Jeremy Vitry - but I really appreciate it :smile:

    Between work and life stuff it has been a minute, but I am still kicking!

    Finished the bakes! Its on to texturing :smiley:

  • Luc4998
    Looks awesome so far man! Interested in how the textures will go :)
  • PyrZern
    Looks great ! Can't wait to see this textured.
  • JoseGR
    Awesome! The sculpture looks so clean. Looking forward to see more :smile:

    As someone who's also going to be doing an overwatch style piece, I'm greatly interested in seeing your thoughts about the challenges you'll face during the process. Sculpt looks on point though! (maybe slight form change around the ocular cavities). Have you thought about how you're going to do the hair reflections to match overwatch's style? Because I'm still conceptually tackling that problem xD haha
  • RitualSynergY
    Hey @Aveon - Thanks! Haha I was just given feedback about the face and eyes recently too - totally agree with you. I'm currently doing some adjustments and re-baking as well.

    My only real plan so far was to try and tackle the flow map as best I could to match their anisotropic hair effect. It will be interesting since Link has unique "chunks" in his hair as well. I felt the young Genji skin was one of the closest to what I have - so I am going to aim in that direction. I don't have a bunch of experience with that so it will be a learning process for me too! Sorry I don't have more info at the moment :D

    Or maybe someone will see this and helps us out :p

  • pmiller001
    Super glad you're doing this!, it looks tight!

    @RitualSynergY haha totally fine, I was just curious to hear your thoughts. Looking forward to your progress :smile:
  • JamesMeader
    Not the biggest Zelda fan but I loved the Link concept and I think you're doing a solid job so far. Can't wait to see the texture, maybe it's been mentioned in the thread but I'm guessing you'll be attempting to texture in the style of Overwatch? If so check out the overwatch texture breakdown a polycounter did, can just search it on Google.

    Anyway can't wait to see more progress.

  • RitualSynergY
    @Aveon hehe - thanks!

    @JamesMeader - appreciate it man! I have seen that page and saved all those images for reference but thanks! :smiley:

    O.K - So a few changes along the way to this update. I adjusted the face/eyes, so hopefully there is improvement there. I also noticed I really didn't consider his silhouette when I started putting clothes on him so he started looking beefier in the mid section than I had intended :blush: . So I adjusted that a bit in hopes of making him seem a bit thinner.

    I put all the base materials on him and went a tad crazy with the decals (just really wanted to see them). Now comes the real texturing! Ill tackle his hair, face, and material details with the next update; along with the sword and shield. If anyone has anything to add on what they see so far, please let me know :smile:

    Dude this is awesome!

    I'm getting thrown off a bit with the green and blue color scheme, personally.  I think that one of the things that makes Overwatch characters so iconic is that they have a vibrant yet simplistic color scheme (at least with the default skins).  Widowmaker is purple, Pharah is blue and gold, Tracer is brown and orange.  I think that green with dark green might be a better combination, and will make Link unmistakably Link again.

  • Steve Schulze
    The colours are roughly the same as Lucio's though his costume does seem to flow a bit better. The gradients definitely help blend everything together. The piping breaks things up quite a bit. Maybe making it a little more subtle and perhaps hinner may work too.
  • RitualSynergY
    @gsokol - thanks! I can see what you mean, I was thinking more of a greenish blue might help pull some of that together.

    @Steve Schulze - Ok cool Ill bring in some more obvious gradients then. :smiley:. When you say piping are you referring to the white trim?

  • disanski
    Wow this looks awesome man :)
  • Steve Schulze
  • RitualSynergY
    @disanski - Thanks a ton man!

    @Steve Schulze - haha no problem. I have seen that awesome thread as well, I will definitely look to match the shading/gradients with my next pass. Thanks!

  • HeyGafilimore
    This totally fits into the style dude! Can't wait to see the finished product!

    that looks fantastic, love those gradients! maybe you could gradient some of the shield colours a bit too?
  • diegohj
    Wow! Amazing, man:o
  • Aveon
    Man haven't been on Polycount of late so I didn't get to see these till now, Loving it @RitualSynergY ! I think you could really push the dirt/grunge in his reflections though, it's still feeling pretty flat. When I looked at the data-mined models/textures of tracer as an example they have a bit of lighting info and darkening-gradients in the texture, so can't hurt to at least put the AO in the texture maybe.
  • RitualSynergY
  • lotet
    wow, this looks really good! my only crit right now is the hair is looking a bit plasticy, and maybe a tad to greenish?
  • Asura
    This came out nicely! I can really see him being in overwatch :smiley:

  • RitualSynergY
    @slosh Thanks so much man!

    @Brian "Panda" Choi - LOL

    @TeriyakiStyle - Thanks so much! I have no idea what Jeremy (concept artist) had in mind O_o - but I imagined it like a cross between genji and doomfist. I really like the idea of a character with a sword and shield that has the ability to get into combat with light/heavy attacks. Couple that with damage reduction ability when holding up the shield. Perhaps even a push back ability from the shield when timed properly. The ULT would be something akin to the Zelda games where he would spin around rapidly with his sword.

    So perhaps (on PC)

    Left Mouse - Light Swing with minor jump.
    Right Mouse - Heavy (with charge option) with large lunge.
    Shift - Hold Shield up for damage block/reduction for a certain amount of time. Press when about to receive damage for a small push back or reflect option.
    E - Use on of your three potions for either health, armor, or ability cool down reduction.
    Q - Sword spin attack - You can also control his movement during the attack.

    I probably just made an OP character but oh well haha! :blush:

  • lotet
    Nice work, turned out great, congrats on finishing!

    Oh man, I love this so much awesome job!
  • Bedrock
    That's quite the color variety for an Overwatch character! I know you are finished (and it looks amazing), but I would probably darken the lower leg and do something about the boots. They work great in the drawing because they share the same roughness with the rest of the character but the shine really makes them noticeable.

    10/10 pose by Stephane btw
